24 Hours Til Departure

We are a little over 24 hours before our flight to Dulles International departs Atlanta.  We will layover there for 3 hours before boarding Ethiopian Airlines for our 13.5-hour flight to Addis Ababa.  I am going to share some snippets of information with you that will be a mix of praise and prayer request you can sort out.

Lynne checked off a tandem parachute jump from her bucket list yesterday. 
The freefall made her queasy, and she said it was very loud with the wind rushing by at 120 MPH.  No, she will not be doing this again.

Called the gastroenterologist at the Atlanta VA Medical Center today to schedule simultaneous an endoscopy and a colonoscopy.  Thank goodness you are unconscious when they do it.  The nurse said they would schedule with a nearby civilian surgeon and give me a call.  I told her I would be out of the country for the month of July and would not be available even by phone.  She asked where we were going and what we were doing, so I explained where and what we were scheduled to do. She said she is excited for us.  I told her we are humbled and a little scared at the gravity of what God is calling us to do that.  She said, "In the name of the Father I claim this for you.  God is going to do great things through you while you are there.  You just get off the plane and empty the vessel.  God will fill it and take care of the rest."  Not your typical call to the Veteran's Administration.

I spoke with Josh Chance, our missionary contact in Tanzania.  He asked for prayer.  Let me quote the texts that we exchanged via WhatsApp (Josh's side of the conversation).

  • "Hanneke replied this morning and yes she has it set up, so I will see you at the Landmark."
  • "So yes, buckle up and get ready the LZ (landing zone) in Dodoma is HOT.  We are looking forward to your reinforcement.  We need that prayer.  Some prayer artillery ...heavenly howitzers ...it is hard to explain how frustratingly hard it has been to get small tasks accomplished the last 3 weeks.  Hopefully, it will calm down for Y'all."
  • "We must be shaking strongholds because we are getting attention!"
Coveting your prayers for us, for the staff at Dodoma and for Josh & family.  Below is our flight itinerary.  I have read and heard that getting out of Addis Ababa can be difficult and tricky baggage-wise.  Appreciate your prayers throughout our trip.  Will keep you updated as WiFi allows.   There was great concern and consternation among our Rosemont Zambia group over the picture I reposted of the Spitting Cobra (dead) from a hut in Zambia.  Did a little research and found the following information from the Zambia Travel Guide .  I found it enlightening and informative.  Please take note of the highlighted portions. A little less than two months and we will be winging our way to Zambia. In order to volunteer there we have to present an invitation at Zamibian Immigration showing we were invited (picture to the left).   So looking forward to this adventure.  Coveting your prayers in the days before we depart that God will prepare our hearts for whatever work he will have us do.  The first word Jesus gave us in the Great Commission is 'go.'  We are doing that. Pray that he prepares our hearts to minister, and make disciples, and be discipled by those at New Day Orphanage. My beard is coming along well.  Stopped at the Ice Cream Club  last night for dinner and ice cream.  Proprietor Bill Garrett said, "you look wiser already Larry!"  I told him "my step-father used to tell me I was wise, but he added a word after wise   .  .  .  I think Jesus road into Jerusalem on one of those."   It has been an experience just not shaving.  When the wind blows my face feels fuzzy.

June 19 Addendum

June 19 th Addendum                Bible study with Kalanga today did not go as I expected it to go, but God had a plan.  My plan was we would take a passage of Scripture and separately study it using the ABC method.  Each morning we would compare notes and discuss the passage.  Kalanga did not understand what I had planned.  So I taught the passage to him.  Our passage today was Romans 8:28-30.   Check it out and you will see the challenge I faced, but God brought me through (Jeremiah 1:5-8 was actually a passage we referenced in our discussion).  Now that I know I will be leading Kalanga in a Bible study I can prepare better.                Yesterday our study was earlier in Romans 8 when Paul talks about the Holy Spirit interceding for us when we don’t know what to pray.  Kulanga share with me that when he was in Swaziland digging for amethyst, he ran out of food once.  He had not eaten or had water in several days.  Without money he could not purchase food or water in the l
